This country still has the innovation, the brain power, and maybe the money to fix all or most of our problems. Now whether or not we still have the time to fix things, like our part of the global warming problem, is still questionable. But, we do have the power to START, to start fixing a whole lot of other issues, that impact all the other interrelated issues.
1. the big APE in the room: ENERGY, and how we here in America use it, make it, and distribute it. nearly the only APE in the room, as we are slowly killing them off, but that is another topic for another day. Our Coal supply is dwindling to nothing, and the extraction methodes surrounding its removal are no longer acceptable, and hasn’t been for at least one generation. The mountain-top removal method is absolutely unacceptable, and must be stopped. However, the Government, in the pockets of the wealthiest 1% of this country, have delayed, and continue to delay, research into a viable alternative/s for this “commodity.” My belief is that this Gov, and the previous 4, have been well aware that we are in deep trouble, but truly do not have a clue on how to proceed to move away from this, and the other, Hydrocarbon energy sources. Well, they do know, but haven’t the balls to force the people who TRULY, pay them, to do the research, and the necessary implementations into these acceptable alternatives. While we yet have time left to do so (if we do) before the total collapse of our economy, and believe me that colapse is NOT far away.
1a. Why we don’t have much choice in alternatives at this time. INFRASTRUCTURE. Our energy distribution system is designed to move natural gas (what is UN-natural gas?), from point a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h,i,j,k,l, etc. to point m.n,o,p,g,r,s,t, etc. The people who built the piping systems, to move the gas, have spent Billions putting it into the ground and they are loath to see this system, and the payments for their use come to an end. Do we have a choice AT THIS TIME, no not really. The pipes could carry Hydrogen, our furnaces could be converted to use hydrogen, it burned even cleaner that “natural gas”, but we have NO way to make hydrogen at this time in the quantities that we would need. so using hydrogen to run through the existing distribution infrastructure is out. it would take a leap in technology in order to make enough to fill those pipes, and we have not made it.
1b. The electrical power infrastructure. Electricity, ELECTRICITY, it is the answer. The wires are in place, one of the major problems, and this first is a whopper, is that most homes have been built with natural gas furnaces. So replace them you say, not so easy say I. Why not you say? Well because America no longer makes things, or very few things. (As an aside: do you know WHY we won WWII? Was it patriotism? Our brave Boys in uniform? “yes in part”, but what really won World War II? It was the capacity to convert our massive manufacturing capabilities from civilian production, to war production, in nearly the blink of an eye. We can’t do that now, because those factories have been let go to rust, or just torn down)
Back on topic: So, we CANNOT manufacture enough electric home heating systems if we even wanted to, and the Money does not want to anyway. let all that pipe go to waste? Not make more money from them, no way. So in the forceable future we will continue to poison the poor people who have to be sitting on these natural gas bearing shale formations: ( Marcellus (Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky), Bakken: (North Dakota, Wyoming) Haynesville: (Texas, Loiusiana) Barnett: (Texas) Eagleford: (Texas) Fayettevile (Arkansas) Antrim: (Michigan, Illinois, Ohio) Woodford; (Oklahoma) and anywhere that Fracking goes poison follows, not just some, but hundreds of toxic (killing toxics follow) inevitably, not maybe, not possibility but WILL. Now where is this Shale that could make some poor family drink poison, surely not near my Family? See this map:
WOOPS! yup you are very likely to be sitting on your poisoned future! Anywhere that you see, a shale formation on this map, their are plans to drill it, count on it.
